This year is my tenth anniversary showing art at Bajo el Sol Gallery on St. John. I’m celebrating: images that I have loved painting all these years here are revisited and for this show are left to their essence of contrasts and imbued with colors of life - my life - my dreams, my moods, my loves.

First, I relate deeply to contrasts in lighting. Some of my strongest memories play out over time in pure contrasts of light. For instance, I only remember the lights and shadows of the Pike Place Market in Seattle where I learned of Elvis Presley’s passing, late 70’s?, (surely dating me!), and the light on dry grass as an elephant passed before a storm on a Serengeti plain. Or, more recently, the incessant light and shadow play across islands and seas.

And second, I have a passion for color, which means, colors “color” my world. This doesn’t necessarily mean bolder or brighter. It can and does. But barely there (new blush shoots breaking out of miles of gray winter branches) has its own provocative beauty. And one intense color surrounded by a field of neutrals is like a chorus supporting a magnificent solo.

Simply stated: Light and shadow, color - more or less…
in my world, they rule.
